Miranda is big winner at comedy ceremony

MIRANDA Hart was the big winner at Saturday night’s British Comedy Awards, walking away with three awards.  Her starring role in the BBC2 comedy drama Miranda was highly recognised in the ceremony at the 02 Arena.

Presented by Jonathan Ross, who took the ‘Ricky Gervais’ approach in roasting many celebrities in his hosting duties, it was Hart who was laughing all the way to the bank.  She won Best Female Comedy Actress, Best New TV Comedy Show and the big award of the night, the People’s Choice Award.  She also hinted that Miranda might follow Gavin & Stacey in switching to the mainstream BBC1 service for the next series.

Best Female TV Comic went to Jo Brand, whilst Best Male TV Comic ended up in the hands of the very popular Michael McIntyre, who wasn’t present at the ceremony.  He was doing auditions for the next series of Britain’s Got Talent, and when Amanda Holden presented him with the award, he looked very flustered, which is a rarity for him.

OUTSTANDING: Russell Brand's contribution to comedy

Harry Hill was again a big winner, scooping the Best Comedy Entertainment Personality and Russell Brand, another comedian who couldn’t make the glitzy show won the Outstanding Contribution to Comedy Award.  Brand was meant to make his first public appearance alongside Ross for the first time since the ‘Sachsgate’ scandal of 2008, but pulled out for personal reasons at the last minute, as a close friend had been diagnosed with a brain tumour.  He still took time to poke fun out of the presenter; “I’ve managed to find a way of how to destroy BBC I-Player, as if I haven’t done enough already to that great institution.  Jonathan, you are a father figure, what were you thinking!”

Others winners included the panel show Would I Lie to You, which won Comedy Panel Show and talented Liverpool comedian John Bishop, who collected the prize of Best Male Comedy Breakthrough Artist.  All in all, it was a very successful night at the British Comedy Awards, which lacked the controversy which some may have anticipated in the lead up to the event.  British comedy still remains at its peak and this time around, it was Miranda Hart who was the prized winner overall.

Skins - New series, new cast, more pressure!

THE time of year has come again, it’s the end of January and next week sees the much anticipated new series of E4’s award-winning teen drama Skins.  The Bristol based show enters into its fifth series, and although everyone should expect some of the usual stereotypes about Skins, such as hedonistic teenage lifestyle choices, sex, drugs and drink – there is a lot of change elsewhere around Roundview College.

Yes, it is time to welcome the third generation of Skins, as once again, the producers and writers have decided to start with a clean slate.  Unlike the last cast cull, which did have two characters in the form of Effy Stonem (Kaya Scodelario) and Pandora Moon (Lisa Backwell) who provided continuity through Series 1+2 into 3+4, there are no exceptions this time around.  Effy, JJ, Naomi, Cook, Pandora, Thomas, Katie and Emily are no more and have moved onto pastures new.  It’s time for the new cast to fill their boots, and there is no doubt, that the pressure is on.

CHANGE: The new cast of hit teen drama Skins, can they deliver?

This year, there are eight new characters, all with very different backgrounds.  Some of the new actors were chosen from the open auditions held last spring, others with very minor TV credited roles, with only Dakota Blue Richards having a natural acting background.  Dakota starred in The Golden Compass alongside Nicole Kidman and the 16-year old has also been involved in two other high-profile movies.  Now, the London-born actress takes on the role of Franky Fitzgerald and it’s her character that takes the lead as the first episode next Thursday night.  We find out that Franky has moved to Bristol as a last-minute switch from Oxford.  She comes with a lot of emotional baggage, having been bullied at her previous school, and immediately struggles to fit in, especially with the other girls at the college; best friends Mini (Freya Mayor), Grace (Jessica Sula) and Liv (Laya Lewis).  Although Mini takes Franky under her wing reluctantly, she is determined to dig up some home truths that might leave Franky in an even more perilous situation than before.  

The producers have promised that the darker, consequential Series four has been replaced, admitting it didn’t work for the fans.  Skins will return to its hard-hitting approach, with comic appeal and hopefully, some more pleasant endings for the new generation.  To complete the cast, are music mad Rich (Alexander Arnold), rugby captain Nick (Sean Teale), Matty (Sebastian de Souza) and Aloysius (Will Merrick).  After the success of the ‘Naomily’ story in the last two series, there has been speculation of a gay character plot, but the producers and E4 are remaining very tight-lipped about the entire series to date.  Mystery is the best word to describe the goings on.

The lovable and brilliant Doug (Gilles Thomas) returns for a fifth series as head of Roundview and comedian Chris Addison will return in a cameo role as the controversial and cocky college director David Blood.  Model Kelly Brook will also have a guest appearance as a fitness instructor.  Skins has been well renowned for its guest appearances from the likes of Harry Enfield, Ronni Ancona, Pauline Quirke, Paul Kaye, John Bishop, Harry Hill, Morwenna Banks and Simon Day in the past four years, so expect more of the same this time around.

There is undoubtedly going to be more pressure on the third generation, as change has been greeted with a very mixed response from the hardcore Skins fans.  The show continues to remain afresh because of this change in cast every two years, meaning it will still have a place in the TV viewing schedules for a while to come.  With the likes of Dev Patel, Nicholas Hoult and Kaya Scodelario all going onto huge movie roles, Skins has been seen as a brilliant starting point for young actors and actresses to really inspire to.  The jury will be out, but it is only fair to give the new breed some time to settle into the new roles.  Judging them on one episode would be very harsh and unnecessary.

So it’s out with the old, in the new, what impact Generation three will have on us?  Find out when Series 5 of Skins begins next Thursday at 10pm on E4.

UNSUCCESSFUL: Craig continued Australia's losing trend

With successful stints in Neighbours and Home and Away in the 1980’s, Craig came to Britain hoping to prove that Aussies can win a sport!  His routine was great to watch, though it was lacking the rather required pace for the accompanying music.

Two years ago, Hollyoaks stunner Jennifer narrowly missed out on the final line-up.  Now she was finally living her dream.  Already reportedly intimate with her pro partner Sylvain, it was anticipated this would be partnership in the making.  Despite a huge mistake when she mistimed her roll-up move, it was a good start.

Branded the joker of the pack must be difficult but also appealing as the public will vote more often.  Regardless, Dave’s first performance was actually quite solid and not as disgraceful as first feared.  There is no doubt he may get plenty of support no matter whether he will become good or bad on the ice.

Elen Rivas & Lukasz Rozycki

UNIMPRESSIVE: And Elen paid the price, with an early exit

Known as a model but better as the ex of Frank Lampard, Elen had a lot to prove to everyone that she was lot nicer than first thought.  Not so however, her VT showed her demanding better choreography to put into her routine and she got what she asked for, only to mess it up by just…well…not skating at all perfectly. .

Selected comment: “Where was the passion tonight?  There were fighting words, but they just didn't translate onto the ice.  Very constricted in the upper body and a very disassociated performance from your choreography.” (Jason Gardiner)

Skated to: Are You Ready For Love

Dominic earns the reputation of being the first cricketer to take part on this show and is no doubt hoping to emulate the successes of Darren Gough and Mark Ramprakash on Strictly Come Dancing.  However, it seems like victory is not up his street and this routine showed it.  However, if he doesn’t make constant mistakes and makes the odd improvement, he will go a good distance.

Chloe Madeley & Michael Zenezini

The daughter of famous TV presenting duo Richard & Judy, Chloe is another star who has been linked to participating in the past but has only now got her chance.  Amidst fears she would flop, she didn’t.  In fact, she was the surprise of the night and if she keeps this up, she will be a surprise package in this show.

Selected comment: “I know that there is so much to think about, but technically you have got it now.  Just try and relax and enjoy the character a bit more.  I want to see the cheeky playful Chloe that we know and love.” (Emma Bunton)

FANTASTIC: Sam underlined his bookies favourite potential

Sam is a little-known EastEnders actor that has surely turned into a skating superstar.  Well, that is certainly the impression from this first performance.  So much energy, pace and moves were put into it and he has certainly left a mark on this competition.  Unless there is any serious reply from anyone else within these next couple of weeks, it’s Sam’s competition to lose.

Denise Welch & Matt Evers

PROMISING: But Jason Gardiner really took a dislike to Denise

Those who are associated to Loose Women will indeed be backing Denise throughout.  In honest truth, her first performance was not brilliant but not bad either.  I think it’s fair to say that no matter how she copes, she will get the votes to go through.

Selected comment: “Surprisingly there were real moments of promise, combined with Matt skating with his mum!  I want you to lose the skating with mum quality that we saw.” (Jason Gardiner)

The Result

There were just six places left to fill in the Dancing on Ice 2011 line-up and again, the public alone was responsible in making the decision.  Comedy Dave, Dominic, Chloe, Sam and Denise snatched the first five on offer tonight whilst Jennifer secured the final slot in the skate-off against Craig and Elen.

This will no doubt give Jennifer a serious reality check, just like Laura last week.  However, I always have to be honest at this point and so I must admit, I actually thought she would be knocked out and that Craig would go though, because even if his skating wasn’t up to standard, I honestly thought his personality would shine though and win the public over.  Nevertheless, it’s still a good case that the strongest skater won through again.

So we now have our competition line-up and next week it all kicks off for real.  The judges will finally be able to have their say as their scores will go towards the overall result and will now have complete power again in the skate-off, which reverts back to a head-to-head battle.

Chloe Madeley, Comedy Dave, Denise Welch, Dominic Cork, Jeff Brazier, Jennifer Metcalfe, Johnson Beharry, Kerry Katona, Laura Hamilton, Sam Attwater, Steven Arnold and Vanilla Ice. One of them will win Dancing on Ice 2011, but who will prevail out on top.  It begins next Sunday at 6:10pm on ITV1 (HD).  As always, a report will be issued next week.

Wikipedia celebrates its 10th birthday

THE free online encyclopaedia Wikipedia celebrated its tenth birthday at the weekend.  Launched by Jimmy Wales in San Francisco in 2001, Wikipedia has given the general public a new way to share and collect information, even if it still has its doubters as a valid and creditable source of facts. 

CELEBRATION: Wikipedia is ten not out

Currently, Wikipedia is available in eight different languages, including German, Italian and Spanish.  There is no doubt that its presence on our internet has changed the face of the World Wide Web, alongside the likes of Twitter, YouTube and Facebook.  The site now carries 17million articles in English, adding just over 1,000 new entries a day.

Often derided for allowing almost anyone to edit its pages, Wales has always claimed that this alone proves that its facts are completely true.  Many seem to agree with this argument, and with Wikipedia now the fifth most browsed site on the Internet, it’s hard not to disagree.  Wikipedia has also taken some flak in the past for the failing of academic studies from some students.  Traditional homework does seem to be a thing of the past, but in an interview with Jon Snow last Wednesday for Channel 4 News, Wales defended the allegation of homework shortcomings; “My argument is that teachers also have access to Wikipedia, and once they find out that a student has cut and pasted work, they will get an F.”  “My view is that Wikipedia should be as high quality as we can make it and that necessarily involves an open discussion/debate of people picking over detail as great as possible.” 

In the interview, Wales also confirmed that Wikipedia will always remain user-friendly and user-based, although they might tighten their policies when it comes to editing biographies of famous people.  Wikipedia intents to keep it status as a non-profit organisation so will not use advertising to promote its site. 

Congratulations Wikipedia, I predict this Internet phenomena, no matter the criticism it draws will go from strength to strength.

Golden Globe glory for Firth

GLORY: Colin Firth was the big winner at the Golden Globes

COLIN FIRTH celebrated Golden Globe glory at Sunday night’s award ceremony, picking up Best Actor for his role in ‘The King’s Speech.’

In Los Angeles, Firth was the best hope for British glory across the Atlantic and he duly delivered.  He looked shocked at the announcement and praised his fellow cast members that helped him achieve such a prestigious success.  At the ceremony, he said; “I own a very great debt to the supernaturally talent fellow cast members.”  However, for a film that has achieved great acclaim back home and also earnt itself 14 nominations this morning for the BAFTA film awards, Firth’s actor gong was the only award it picked out of seven; bound to be a severe disappointment.

The night belonged to ‘The Social Network.’  Having got six nominations on the shortlist, the film – which narrates the story of how Mark Zuckerberg set-up Facebook at University walked away with four awards, including the most prized asset at the Golden Globes of Best Film.  The other Brit to win a Globe was Christian Bale, scooping the award of Best Supporting Actor for his role in boxing movie ‘The Fighter.’  “Fantastic, we are being spoilt rotten over at that table, thank you so much,” Bale said when he picked up his award.  ‘The Fighter’ won two awards, with Melissa Leo taking the award for Best Supporting Actress.  

The ceremony was hosted by comedian Ricky Gervais for the second successive year, and as ever, he did spark some controversy with some of his introductions to those people who were giving out awards.  There was a lifetime achievement award for the highly respected Robert de Niro, Natalie Portman scooped the Best Actress Globe for her role Black Swan and the stunning Toy Story 3 claimed success in the Best Animated Film category.  There were also two awards in the TV section for the hit US musical drama, Glee. 

Despite not doing as well as expected, ‘The King’s Speech’ should do better at the BAFTA’s and the night well and truly belonged to Colin Firth.  Attention in the cinema world now starts to drift towards the Oscars next month. 

FA Barclays Premiership Report (15th - 16th January)

ANOTHER weekend full of drama and intrigue, as the race to be Barclays Premiership winner hots up.  Five still remain in the race and the bottom of the table continues to tighten up; here are the reports from the latest action.

Sunday 16^th January: Liverpool 2-2 Everton

BELIEF: The Liverpool fans got behind Kenny, but they didn't win, AGAIN!

KENNY Dalglish earnt his first point in his second spell as Liverpool manager, but Everton will be the happier of the two sides after a pulsating 214^th Merseyside Derby.  Liverpool dominated the first half, and had a deserved half-time when Raul Meireles drilled a shot past Tim Howard on the half hour, his first goal for Liverpool.  Howard had saved smartly twice from Dirk Kuyt and Fernando Torres smashed the woodwork early on.  Less than a minute into the second half, the visitors were level when Sylvain Distin climbed about Martin Skrtel to guide a header home at the back post.  Six minutes later and Everton were infront.  Leon Osman created it and Jermaine Beckford drove his shot past Pepe Reina. Kuyt converted an equalising penalty midway through the second half with aplomb, after Howard’s unnecessary challenge on Maxi Rodriguez.  A draw was a fair result on the balance of play, but Liverpool stay perilously close to the bottom three.

Sunday 16^th January: Sunderland 1-1 Newcastle United

NEWCASTLE controlled the Tyne & Wear derby throughout, but Asamoah Gyan scored a priceless equaliser to grab a fortunate point for Sunderland.  Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan scored his fourth goal in two games against the arch enemy this season.  His clever backheel from Joey Barton’s corner have the Magpies a deserved lead.  In the fourth minute of added on time, Phil Bardsley’s shot was only parried by Steve Harper and the ball rebounded off the Ghanaian Gyan, lifting the roof off the Stadium of Light.  Both sides remain in the top half, and can dream of European football.

Sunday 16^th January: Tottenham Hotspur 0-0 Manchester United

DESPITE training at White Hart Lane, David Beckham could only watch on as Manchester United extended their unbeaten run at Tottenham.  In a poor game that failed to live up to its top billing expectations, Peter Crouch blasted wide with Tottenham’s best chance.  Wayne Rooney forced two smart saves from Hereulho Gomes for the away side, who had young Brazilian Rafael sent off for two yellow cards; the second an unfortunate collision with Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

Saturday 15^th January: Manchester City 4-3 Wolves

UNTIL their rivals point in North London, Manchester City had top spot for 24 hours, but they had to work very hard against Wolves.  Nenad Mijias struck to put the visitors infront with a scrappy goal, before Kolo Toure equalised for sleepy City.  Edin Dzeko came close on his debut, but the £27million was put in the shade by Carlos Tevez, who was magical again, scoring twice.  Yaya Toure put the game beyond Wolves, but they fought to the death at Eastlands.  Joleon Lescott bought down Kevin Doyle in the penalty area, the Irishman converted the penalty before an own goal from Nigel de Jong made it a very nervous finish.  City held on though, to keep the pressure on United at the top.

Sunday 16^th January: Birmingham City 1-1 Aston Villa

DESERVED: James Collins earnt Villa a share of the spoils

A POINT wasn’t ideal for both cities in the Second City derby, as local pride again remained intact.  Craig Gardner’s poor free-kick bounced off David Murphy, and fell into the path of Roger Johnson, who turned the ball into the net from seven yards soon into the second half for Birmingham, his first goal since August.  Villa, who created the more chances and hit the crossbar four times, earned their deserved point through their own centre-back.  James Collins struck via a deflection from Liam Ridgewell, enough to take them out of the bottom three. 

Saturday 15^th January: West Ham United 0-3 Arsenal

DIGNITY: Avram Grant keeps cool, even though his job remains on the line

ARSENAL kept on the coattails of the two Manchester clubs, on a day when Avram Grant was lucky to make it to kick-off.  Intense rumours of his departure can’t have helped the Hammers, who were ripped apart by the Gunners right from the outset.  With 13 minutes gone, Robin Van Persie had Arsenal infront and Theo Walcott made it 2-0 before half-time.  West Ham were outpaced and outclassed, as Jack Wilshire and Cesc Fabregas pulled the strings in midfield throughout.  Wayne Bridge, on loan from Manchester City, had a miserable debut at left-back and having been terrorised by Walcott’s pace all evening, hacked him down in the penalty area.  Van Persie duly scored the penalty to complete the scoring.  Grant threw his scarf into the crowd at the final whistle, whose dignity remains intact, although the West Ham board deserves to take some stick for the way they have treated the Israeli.  It felt like the long goodbye, but with Martin O’Neill pulling out of the race to be manager this morning, Grant now looks like he will stay on as manager until the end of the season at least.

Saturday 15^th January: West Brom 3-2 Blackpool

AN ABSOLUTE humdinger at the Hawthorns, which could easily have ended 10-10!  David Vaughan had Blackpool infront in the early exchanges, with his goal being cancelled out by the dangerous Peter Odemwingie.  James Morrison’s deflected effort had West Brom infront, but Gary Taylor-Fletcher scored his second goal of the week (he netted in Blackpool’s 2-1 win over Liverpool on January 12) to make it 2-2.  Odemwingie won it for the Albion, getting goal side of Craig Cathcart and bending an effort past Matt Gilks to give West Brom their first win in six matches.

Saturday 15^th January: Chelsea 2-0 Blackburn Rovers

CHELSEA returned to the top four in the league, recording only their second win in ten Barclays Premier League games against a resilient Blackburn side.  Despite Didier Drogba continuing to look a pale shadow of his former self, Chelsea scored twice in the second half, courtesy of Branislav Ivanovic and Nicholas Anelka.

Saturday 15^th January: Stoke City 2-0 Bolton Wanderers

STOKE moved upto eighth in the table, after recording a deserved victory against a Bolton side, that have now lost their last five matches away from home.  It was a miserable afternoon for Bolton keeper Juusi Jaaskelainen.  He scored an own goal in the first half, although Danny Higginbotham will claim it.  After Zat Knight pressed the self-destruct button by missing the ball and clattering into Matthew Etherington, the Stoke winger just about scored the penalty, despite Jaaskelainen getting two hands onto the ball.

Saturday 15^th January: Wigan Athletic 1-1 Fulham

DROUGHT: Ended for Andy Johnson

FOR the fifth year in a row, this fixture ended in a draw, leaving Wigan trapped in the bottom three.  Hugo Rodallega broke the deadlock for Wigan in the second half.  However, Fulham showed a lot of character to recover and despite Clint Dempsey having a goal ruled out correctly for handball, salvation for the Cottagers came from Andy Johnson.  It was a scrappy goal, but AJ couldn’t care less, as he scored his first Premiership goal since February 2009.  

2011 Autosport International Show Review - Back to its best

AFTER last year’s disappointing and lacklustre affair, the Autosport International Show returned to its action-packed and breathtaking best.  The exhibition, held at the newly renamed LG Arena (the NEC) in Birmingham on 15 – 16 January produced plenty of thrills and spills, that would whet the appetite of anyone motor racing fan.  I went to experience the event on Saturday, and came away delighted with the whole day.

CHAMPION: Lewis Hamilton's winning 2008 car was on show

First stop was the exhibition of world championship winning cars by the McLaren Formula One team.  From the early days of Bruce McLaren, all the cars were shown to the public in stunning detail.  Amongst them were the first winning world championship car, driven by Emerson Fittipaldi in 1974, the beasts that were designed which saw Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost dominant the late 80’s, all the way through to Lewis Hamilton’s world championship winning car in 2008.  The public were allowed to get fairly close and personal to these monsters, and all credit has to go to McLaren for allowing fans to experience the intensity of what a winning Grand Prix racing car looks like.

SEXY: Lotus Renault's new F1 challenger looks stunning

McLaren may be a championship frontrunner for the 2011 FIA Formula One World Championship, but it will take something special to overhaul Renault for the title of F1’s sexiest car of the year.  With official backing from Lotus, the cracking black and gold colour, synonymous with the Lotus team in the 1980’s is back for the new season.  It will be driven by Robert Kubica and Vitaly Petrov, and although it wasn’t the official launch, Lotus Renault showed off its new model, which looks stunning and breathtaking.  As this was a new car, access was limited – but the breathtaking pictures suggest that it will be one to watch – in many different ways.  In Kubica’s talented hands, I predict it will be a winner too.

DEMONSTRATION: The Virgin Racing pitwall was a starring spectacle

Last year’s dismal Autosport show was lifted by the appearance of the Formula One world champion, Jenson Button.  This year, motorsport stars were few and far between.  BBC F1’s anchorman Jake Humphrey and new main commentator Martin Brundle were in attendance.  Martin was quick to deny the media reports of a personality clash with Jonathan Legard, which led to Legard’s departure from the BBC team in midweek.  BTCC champion Jason Plato, 1979 world champion Jody Scheckter and sportscar aces Tom Kristensten and Allan McNish were the other picks.  Virgin Racing also allowed fans the chance to sit on their pitwall, play with some of the technical buttons and experience what the engineers go through during an everyday F1 race weekend.  I spoke to an employee from the team, who gave me a lot of useful information.  I asked him the validity of the pitwall, which he confirmed; “After the show, we will take down the wall, change the electrics and give the screens a dust and then, it is off to Valencia for the first pre-season test in three weeks time.”

SPONSORED: Fifth Gear put on a great show at the Live Action Arena

Plato went onto present the action from the Live Action Arena.  Sponsored by Channel Five, it was a show for those who are fans of Fifth Gear.  Plato was alongside the boring, useless Tiff Needell, with the glamour girl Vicky Butler-Henderson setting a series of challenges for the male stars to compete in.  In the show I went to, which I got front row seats for!  Needell got the better of Plato 2-1 in the challenges, but that sounded like a fluke, as people had been telling me that Plato had thrashed him all day.  This proved why Jason Plato stars on the British Touring Car circuit and why Tiff Needell is only a clueless TV presenter.  Sadly, he is nowhere near the class of Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond.  Nevertheless, the banter between the pair was well worth the entrance fee.  Once they disappeared, the crowd were treated to stunts from Terry Grant, and three-wheel racing from the likes of ‘Walliams,’ ‘McLauren’ and ‘Red Ball!’  By far, it was the best live action arena experience I’ve ever had.

LETDOWN: The F1 Racing Grid was the main disappointment

In previous years, there has been a lot of content at the LG Arena, but a lot of half-hearted attempts from manufacturers.  This year, the only main letdown was the F1 Racing Grid.  The cars of Ferrari, Sauber and Hispania were missing, making in half incomplete and by being sealed off, it made the exhibit very difficult for fans to take photographs of.  The F1 Racing Grid has been a dismal letdown for many years now, and I don’t think it will meet the highs of cars hanging from the walls, like they did in 2007.  Maybe they should do like the World Rally Championship, and scrap this display, because it isn’t getting any better.

That aside, it was a great day and a great event.  Last year, I left feeling very short changed and disappointed.  This year, it was totally value for money and a great experience.  I will be back in 2012 to visit again, but first – here’s to a classic motorsport season in 2011!

Devastating floods worldwide leave many homeless

ANGER and massive clear-up operations are underway worldwide after some of the worst flooding to be seen for years, which has badly affected three countries.  Sri Lanka, Brazil and Australia are only now beginning to count the cost of such destruction, which has left some dead, and many others stranded, with their houses washed away.

In Australia, Brisbane and Queensland have been the two most badly-hit areas in the country, with the floods leaving a trail of destruction that seems more akin to a hurricane.  Many communities are still cut off in the aftermath of the floods, which began just after Christmas Down Under.  Only from helicopter pictures can the horror of the mess caused can really be told.  The police in Australia have admitted that some people may never be found, but they are doing what they can to eliminate those chances.  For many in the affected regions, they have their own stories to tell, sadly – most of them end up being a sickening tale and an act of pure luck that they are still alive.  Some eyewitnesses have compared the floods to ‘tornadoes with miles of debris scattered like confetti at a wedding.’  The force of the water levels has swept away many bodies miles away from where they lived, meaning it will take a long while for the final official confirmation of the dead.  Currently, the total in Oz stands at 20, with 53 people still unaccounted for.  12,000 military are now in force with the rescue operation, more than double on the initial callout when the floods began.  Australia has taken a battering from the floods, but similar to the fallen Ashes cricket side, will bounce back and with the tough community spirit that they always show, can rebuild their shattered lives.

STRUGGLE: Many people have been left homeless in Sri Lanka

The same can’t be said in poorer countries like Sri Lanka.  An estimated 325,000 people have been forced to leave their homes because of flooding.  Towns and villages are submerged with gallons of water in the South and North of the country.  The Sri Lankan government has deployed 30,000 troops to help with the relief effort and has called for a quick response.  As the torrential downpours continue, the death toll is expected to rise.  11 more people died today, taking the current figure to 38 that have lost their lives in this flooding catastrophe.  The UN has urged for international aid to arrive, particularly bottled water and mattresses for those who are staying in emergency shelters. 

DEVASTATION: The landslides in Brazil have left a nation in shock

Brazil hasn’t got off lightly either, and has probably been devastated the most by this week’s floods.  Rescue teams in the South American country are working flat out, but tragically, it is to find bodies, rather than survivors.  The towns of Teresoplois and Petropolis have been the worst affected by Friday’s landslides.  Some survivors have been faced with the grim task of helping the rescue teams find the bodies of their own families and friends.  Communities have been overwhelmed, with 13,500 people made homeless, one of the worst natural disasters to have ever hit Brazil.  Like Sri Lanka, many cut-off communities are in desperate need for food, clean water and medicine supplies.  At least 500 people have died here, and with more rain forecasted, the death toll is set to rise.  Billions of dollars of damage has been caused and gives the newly-elected Brazilian president Dilma Rousseuf a major headache, only two weeks into her new role.  She will have to deal with the lack of supplies and frustration from families at the lack of flood defences available to the country, as Brazil deals with one of the worst landslides to hit the world in the last half a century.

Almost a year on from the earth-shattering earthquake to have struck Haiti, it seems like Mother Nature continues on its trail of destruction and it is many communities in Asia, Australia and South America that have felt the significant force of destruction, ripping apart many communities and killing many.  Thoughts go out to all those affected, some who now have the long and painstaking process of trying to rebuild their lives if possible. 

BRITS nominations honour Tinie Tempah

DOMINATOR: Tinie Tempah should be the big winner

UK rapper Tinie Tempah is the frontrunner for the 2011 BRIT awards, scooping four nominations.  Star of such hit songs, ‘Pass Out’ and ‘Written in the Stars,’ Tempah looked delighted to have been held in such regard at Thursday’s launch ceremony.  He looks set to have a big blast come the time of the prestigious music ceremony, to be held on February 15 at the 02 Arena. 

He was nominated in all the main British categories ‘British Breakthrough Act’ ‘British Single,’ ‘British Male Solo Artist and ‘British Album of the Year’ for ‘Discovery.  Plan B will go face-to-face with Tinie Tempah in three of these categories.  Mercury Prize winners the xx and Mumford & Sons also appear three times on the shortlists.  There are two nominations for Ellie Goulding, proving that she has come a long way from winning the Critics Choice award in 2010.  The reformed Take That earn a couple of nominations and Cheryl Cole will come up against X-Factor stars Alexandra Burke and 2010 winner Matt Cardle for the ‘British Single’ prize.

DOUBLE: Katy Perry is up for two gongs

Having no nominated album meant that Lady Gaga was missing from the nomination scene, which might be seen as a relief to some, after the show she put in last year in the odd-looking dress that she dedicated to late fashion designer Alexander McQueen.  Without Gaga, the international stage looks weaker that normal and the nominations are shared out this time around.  After a sensational year, which included a high-profile marriage to Russell Brand and three No.1 singles, Katy Perry earns herself two nominations and is possibly unlucky to not receive anymore.  Kings of Leon, Eminem, Arcade Fire and Cee Lo Green also receive a pair of nominations.

The ceremony will once again be broadcasted by ITV and sponsored by MasterCard.  The venue switch to the 02 Arena is a new feature, with the BRITS having been traditionally held at the Royal Albert Hall over the previous decade.  The winning trophy has been radically designed by Vivienne Westwood and ex-Gavin & Stacey star James Cordon will host the show. 

Music is almost ready to have its big night of the year, but it will have to take some shock to stop Tinie Tempah dominating the night.

BBC F1 goes HD . . . and it's bye bye to Legard

JONATHAN Legard is the biggest casualty, as the BBC has decided to make some changes to its F1 coverage.  Legard, who has been the main face of the BBC’s F1 commentary team since it won back the UK TV rights from ITV at the end of 2008, has been dropped.  Reportedly, it is due to his lack of gelling with co-commentator, Martin Brundle.  Brundle, an ex-McLaren, Benetton and Ligier driver in his distinguished F1 career, which spanned twelve years, has been promoted to the top commentating job.

NEW TEAM: David Coulthard joins Brundle in the commentary box

Martin will be joined in the box by his good friend David Coulthard.  Coulthard, who won 13 races in his F1 career (1994-2008), will combine his new role with the punditry position he has had for the last two seasons.  Eddie Jordan will have more of a bigger role in the races now, whilst Jake Humphrey continues to anchor the show.  Ted Kravitz and Lee McKenzie remain in the pitlane reporting roles.

There have been changes to the BBC Five Live team too, as Natalie Pinkham becomes their new pitlane reporter.  Pinkham takes over from Holly Samos, who left at the end of last season to spend more time with her family.  The dynamic duo of Anthony Davidson and David Croft will remain as the voice of radio.

For F1 fans, all 20 races in the 2011 season will be broadcast in HD for the first time.  The commercial body for the sport, FOM (Formula One Management) confirmed on Tuesday that the technology would be available for all international broadcasters.  Unsurprisingly, the BBC has added the HD element to its growing portfolio list.  Ben Gallop, the head of Formula One for BBC is delighted with the HD move; “We're delighted to be broadcasting in HD, something we know fans have been waiting for and it will really add something extra to our coverage for 2011." 

OUT: Jonathan Legard is no longer the voice of Formula One

The Beeb have decided to make these changes to keep the show fresh and new.  I wish Jonathan Legard the best for his future journalism career, and it will be interesting to see how the new dynamic of Brundle and Coulthard works out in the commentator box.

The new season begins in Bahrain on March 13 2011.

Dancing on Ice 2011 - First qualifying heat

DANCING on Ice returned to ITV1 with a massive facelift, in an aim to appeal more viewers to the excitement of the show.  Armed with a brand new set, which looks bigger and more attractive, 16 new celebrities and with the show in high definition for the first time, it was time to get down to the gritty business of competing.

This year, the 16 stars have to pass a qualifying heat to compete.  Only 12 will make into the contest itself and the public would make the ultimate decision as to who it would be.  The ice panel was also reworked with just Jason Gardiner, Robin Cousins and Emma Bunton scoring the performances, now out of marks of ten, which makes sense as having a maximum score of 18 just wouldn’t work.

Steven Arnold & Nina Ulanova

Performed to: House of Fun

Ex-Corrie favourite Steven had the honour of kicking off DOI 2011.  As always, it is tough to go first and it proved here.  Despite the fact that it was certainly entertaining, nerves did get the better of him and it’s something he will have to get over quickly to stand a chance of staying around for a longer period.

Selected comment: “For me, you didn’t sustain the routine. I can see you were relying on your partner, but you have to be the male presence in the act.” (Jason Gardiner)

Angela Rippon & Sean Rice

Performed to: At Last

DETAILED: But it didn't save Angela from a surprising exit

Having appeared as a guest judge on the show for one week last year, it seemed weird that Angela was now competing on the show.  She does have a lot of dancing experience and this routine seemed to show it, though there were a few noticeable errors.  A polished routine if not memorable.

Selected comment: “There was serenity about the performance, the leg and hand lines are beautiful but you need to let yourself go and don't worry about attention to detail on the dancing side as much.” (Robin Cousins)

Laura Hamilton & Colin Ratushniak

Performed to: My Life Would Suck Without You

FEARLESS: Laura Hamilton wowed everyone on week one

The Nickelodeon presenter claims to be fearless and willing to tackle anything.  This routine proved just that, although it might have been lacking in any special elements, the pace was very quick and proved her intentions in this competition.  Laura may well be in the show for the long term.

Johnson Beharry & Jodeyne Higgins

Performed to: Wishing On a Star

It must have felt like a daunting experience for Johnson, little mentioned of and now preparing for something that seemed just as dangerous as his army conflicts.  Nevertheless, he actually did quite well and although he very nearly fell down in the contestants’ introduction at the start, this performance certainly made up for the mishap.

Selected comment: “The blades, moving like an ice skater.  Six years in and you are one of the most confident skaters. It was sublime.” (Robin Cousins)

Nadia Sawalha & Mark Hanretty

Performed to: Proud Mary

Out of all of the stars competing at the weekend, Nadia was perhaps the most nervous of all.  Her routine turned out to be one of two halves.  It started well but soon got dull and slow towards the end.  Overall, a disappointing start but there is certainly room for improvement.

Selected comment: I wouldn't say I'm entirely happy.  I think that it did start off with great potential and then you started to dance on your own and your legs looked anaesthetised and they went numb.” (Jason Gardiner)

Kerry Katona & Dan Whiston

Performed to: Make You Feel My Love

Kerry is certainly the most talked about celebrity of this year’s line-up.  Having finally got her life back on track after several years in the doldrums, she is now aiming for redemption.  Her first performance was solid if unspectacular and there is already a connection with her partner Dan.  If she keeps this up and makes consistent improvement, Kerry will also go a long distance.

Jeff Brazier & Isabelle Gauthier

Performed to: The Way Love Goes

RISING: Jeff Brazier was in control of his partner throughout

Jeff has been a rising star in TV over recent years, mainly due to his involvement with The X-Factor.  Taking part on DOI will surely enhance his career and his first performance was good.  Although there was the odd mistake now and again, you can certainly expect he will be one to watch throughout.

Selected comment: “I love the dance moves!  I'd like you to commit more to the dance moves, make your arms stronger, but I like your smile and I have to admit I have a soft spot for you.” (Emma Bunton)

Vanilla Ice & Katie Stainsby

Performed to: Word Up

Before he came onto this show, everyone had different opinions onto how Vanilla Ice would approach this competition.  His first routine proved he wants to win the show.  A lot of energy and tricks were put into it and he may well be the dark horse in the competition if he keeps this up.

Selected comment: “It was a great routine, which played to all your strengths and all your Vanilla-isms.  There was solid partnering; great lifts but I wonder how you will adapt to different styles.” (Jason Gardiner)

The Result

For these preliminary heats, the panel was powerless as the public decided who would go into the competition proper.  The scores they gave would not work as an advantage, only acting as a guidance to the viewers.

Vanilla, Kerry, Johnson, Jeff and Steven were chosen to go through to the contest by the public, leaving an all-girl skate off between Angela, Nadia and a huge shock, top of the leaderboard Laura for the one remaining place from this heat.

In the first ever three-way skate off, each of them skated again as before whilst phone lines reopened for the public to resume voting during it.  After the votes were counted up, Laura snatched the final slot available, eliminating both Angela and Nadia.

DEMISE: Nadia's departure from the show wasn't surprising

Nadia’s exit was expected as she hadn’t really garnered much support but Angela’s was a little bit surprising given her previous dance experience.  She may have gotten much further, but with a contestant like Laura in the bottom three, there was always only going to be one winner.

In truth, Dancing on Ice 2011 has made an impressive start.  The set looks brilliant; the change in format has certainly left the contestants more under pressure so the omens are already in place for a great series.  On Sunday, Chloe Madeley, ‘Comedy’ Dave Vitty, Craig McLachlan, Denise Welch, Dominic Cork, Elen Rivas, Jennifer Metcalfe and Sam Attwater will battle for the six remaining places in the show itself.  Join me again next week for the second qualifying heat report.
